TPUD’s RESPONSE TO BLM's HELENA FIRE INVESTIGATION REPORT
WEAVERVILLE, CALIFORNIA, NOVEMBER 20, 2017
An investigation report by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) released today, asserts that the Helena Fire originated as a result of a tree branch making contact with a Trinity Public Utility District (TPUD) power line. The District’s own review has concluded that the fire started before the tree branch made contact with its line located in the vicinity of the old Helena Cemetery.
According to Paul Hauser, General Manager of the TPUD, “a tree branch from a tree located outside of the power line right-of-way appears to have made contact with our power line. Available information makes clear that the fire started before there was any power line contact.” This information, according to Hauser, includes the Trinity County Sheriff’s Department dispatch record showing the fire was first reported prior to the District’s equipment recording any power line contacts.
According to Hauser, the District’s review of the fire has included an assessment of its compliance with industry standards for power line distance from trees and branches. “TPUD has met or exceeded all applicable standards in that regard,” he stated.
TPUD management and its employees extend our sympathies to all the residents and our customers who have been deeply affected by the losses of homes and property in the area of the Helena fire.
